HOW TO GUIDE TO LAYERING & STACKING
LAYERING AND STACKING MADE EASY
LAYERING AND STACKING MADE EASY
Layering necklaces can be tricky. Whether you own 3 necklaces or 30, it's a goal to step into the perfect Instagram shot that shows you understand the current layering look without ending up in a tangle. While there is an occasional place for a huge statement necklace, what's in is an interesting mix of multiple pieces from your jewelry collection which can define your persona and attract the interest of others.
Ylang 23 has flown the flag for layered necklaces for over 25 years and even coined the term 'Layer and Mix’ in the '80s, encouraging a look which mixed the old with the new and designers with treasured family heirlooms. The result can be the personalization of a look that is yours alone, and one which can be re-edited for an occasion or just on a whim.
Build Your Base with Your Favorite Necklace: Successful layering starts with a base of that necklace you never take off, whatever the length. This might be a chain or strand of pearls, either a family piece or a lucky charm. Depending on the length, you will next want to add at least two more at different lengths and with differing chains or beads. While in more traditional times the rule was to not mix metals, feel free to experiment and mix textures and metals along with gemstones.
Start with 3 Necklaces, Expand as Much As You’d Like: 3 is a basic start, but we encourage you to experiment and keep on adding. Owners Alysa and Joanne Teichman have pushed the boundaries of wearing multiple necklaces and they have been featured by the fashion press which describes them as "neck mess' to 'happy tangle', although they are carefully placed and not really tangled. While Alysa prefers to stick to yellow gold with some touches of white, Joanne has an affinity for rose gold and it is heavily represented in her mix along with platinum and yellow gold.
If you have favorite necklaces you want to wear that are the exact same length, our experts can recommend shortening one by a minimal amount and for a minimal charge. We also offer customization of length when we place a special order with our designers.
MUST-HAVE LAYERING NECKLACES
What are the possible categories of necklaces you might want to consider adding to your arsenal of necklace possibilities? The team at Ylang 23 suggests that you consider a diamond tennis necklace in a clean design like Jennifer Meyer or Jacquie Aiche or a bit more elevated in baguette diamonds from Suzanne Kalan. Or for a more minimal look, the delicate diamond fringe necklaces by Kataoka, worn by both Alysa and Joanne, is the tiniest neck adornment but is always the first to be noticed.
Everyone needs a lucky charm, and Ylang 23 has a wide selection including from Lito (painted eyes) and good luck pendants from Jennifer Meyer, Sydney Evan, and Marlo Laz.
Splurge on something colorful and special (think one of a kind) which pops like a piece from designers Irene Neuwirth, Retrouvai, Jacquie Aiche, or Selim Mouzannar. Lastly, include something personally meaningful like so many choices from Foundrae (Strength, Dream, Wholeness, Protection).
We love designer Marla Aaron, because not only do her chains with locks look contemporary and special, but they double as keepers for charms you might want to add to your mix.
For sheer enduring beauty, we think everyone should layer in at least one piece of Cathy Waterman, whether it be her Child Charm with your children's names engraved on the back, her Aladdin's Lamp to rub for good luck, or a collection of her iconic charms, including flowers, personalized branch initials, or her love pendant, available in gold or platinum.
We love working with heirlooms and hearing the story behind them, but do the setting and chain work with your mix? Ylang 23 is an expert at reimaging older jewelry, whether it be resetting your treasure or moving it to another chain. Just email Concierge@ylang23.com to get started on your project.
HOW TO PREVENT YOUR JEWELRY FROM TANGLING
The Ylang 23 team gets many questions about keeping necklaces straight to avoid tangles. We suggest that you put your necklaces on starting with the shorter base necklaces and take them off in the reverse order. Chances are, if you do get some tangles, you might be the only one who notices and that's ok. Just as you check your lipstick or hair during the day for adjustment, take a peek at your necklace situation to straighten them. The Ylang 23 team gets many questions about keeping necklaces straight to avoid tangles. As Alysa always quotes: Perfection is the enemy of good and we agree.
The most fun aspect of layering necklaces is that there are no rules. Go ahead, play in your jewelry, and who knows, you might be the next Layering Queen of Instagram!
Ylang 23 has stacked rings for so long, that we own the trademark to "Stack 'em up". Your hands are expressive and most likely punctuate your conversations, so it is important that you personalize your rings with interesting stacks that show your personality.
It is easy to wade into ring stacking by just adding a band to your wedding set in the same or contrasting gold which will bring attention back to your solitaire. There are many choices in plain and diamond bands and also many new styles of bands which are curved or pointed and which add additional interest. At Ylang 23, these can be found in the collections of Anna Sheffield and Cathy Waterman.
If you are a classic girl but want to update your look, turn to Nouvel Heritage and Walters Faith gold bands.
STACK 'EM UP
As we say, jewelry brings us joy, and there is nothing more joyful than a hand full of rings. Save a finger for a great statement ring from designers Foundrae, Kim Dunham, Marlo Laz, or Jacquie Aiche, and for a pinkie ring, we are obsessed with Retrouvai's Fantasy rings. Diamonds bring extra sparkle and happiness to any hand. We have a love affair with Suzanne Kalan's baguette diamonds and the choices are endless.
We also love the sheer creativity of Kataoka, who designs both solitaires and bands.
For the ultimate in a ring stack, your destination is Spinelli-Kilcollin, and we are happy to email you the line and help you customize your ring in a choice of metals, widths, and diamonds. Alysa, Joanne, and Lauren treasure their Spinelli-Kilcollin rings, each different, and they wear them with their other rings or stand-alone.
Lastly, say something with your stacking rings. The ultimate classics are Cathy Waterman's LOVE ring and Sydney Evan's scripted love. Because in the end, that's all we really need.
